Ceisio’i Bywyd Hi
By Martin Crimp
Translation by Owen Martell of Attempts on Her Life
A miscellaneous collection of characters gather to tell a story…to conjure a woman; one that will define and challenge them, love and incense them. The result is a modern-day fable – a tragic comedy for our time. From material greed to unconditional self-sacrifice, from unprotected sex to religious fundamentalism, this is a provocative vision of a world of fear, detachment and alienation and a poignant portrayal of contemporary obsessions.
Since its premiere in 1997, this stirring play has been translated into more than twenty languages. In a bold, multimedia production, with live music from Acid Casuals, Owen Martell (winner of Welsh-Language Book of The Year 2001) brings this contemporary classic to a Welsh-speaking audience. In so doing, we are compelled to consider Welsh-language culture’s international context and are transported from the familiar milieu of language politics, sport and eisteddfod to a brutal world of pornography, ethnic cleansing and international terrorism.
